In the 1960s, Dr. Robert O. Becker, a pioneer in the field of electronic medicine and the theory of electrochemical induction of cell regeneration, developed a profound interest in a creature with superior regenerative capabilities compared to geckos – the salamander. He initiated research into the mechanisms of salamander regeneration, discovering that during limb regeneration, salamanders generate injury currents. These injury currents serve as signals that the organism produces in response to trauma. Through neural conduction, these signals activate the proliferation of stem cells, facilitating the repair and regeneration of the organism.

In 1996, neuroscientist Bradley Duerstock and colleagues from Purdue University's Paralysis Research Center discovered that deliberately reducing or eliminating injury currents significantly slows down or halts limb regeneration in salamanders. This underscores the pivotal role of injury currents as a critical factor in the regeneration process.
